Configuring Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication is a simple and effective way to make access to your 1&1 account even more secure: This means that login to the 1&1 Control Panel and the 1&1 contract service takes place in two steps instead of the usual one. If you want to know more about the benefits and how to do it, please read our article What Is Two-Factor Authentication?

If you are ready to start configuring two-factor authentication immediately, please read the information below:
Step 1
Download the authentication app, e.g. FreeOTP, onto your smartphone.
Step 2
Log into 1&1 Control Panel as usual.
Step 3
You can start two-factor authentication configuration there by clicking Configure two-factor authentication.
Step 4
Scan the QR code once with your smartphone's authentication app. You only need to do this once. A 6-digit code will then be displayed.
Step 5
Enter this 6-digit code at 1&1 under Your 6-digit code. You have 30 seconds to do this. If the time limit is exceeded, a new code will appear automatically which you can use. Each time you log in to your 1&1 Control Panel you now need to enter, in addition to your usual login details, a 6-digit code, which is generated with FreeOTP on your smartphone.
Step 6
Make a note of the recovery code and keep it in a safe place.

If you do not have your smartphone handy, you can get access with a recovery code. However, this means you have to subsequently reconfigure your two-factor authentication. You can read how to find and use the recovery code here Using Two-Factor Authentication Without a Smartphone.
