Set Up an External Domain with 1&1

You want to use your domain with a website or hosting product from 1&1 while keeping your domain registered with your current provider? If so, you can configure it as an external domain. This article will show you how.

Please note:
Performing a DNS transfer to 1&1 (using 1&1 name servers) will NOT transfer the website files, databases, e-mail accounts, etc. It is possible to transfer this data to your 1&1 hosting package before the DNS is changed to point to 1&1. In any case, it is highly suggested to make a backup of all data associated with the domain.
Step 1
Log in to your 1&1 Control Panel and select the relevant package.
Step 2
Click Domains in the My Products section of the left side menu.

Tip:
We recommend using the 1&1 name servers so that you will be able to use all of the 1&1 services and features. To do this, you need to provide our name servers to your domain provider. Once you have finished ading your external domain in the 1&1 Control Panel, we will send you an e-mail with the 1&1 name servers to be entered. You can also find the 1&1 name servers here:
  • ns-us.1and1-dns.com
  • ns-us.1and1-dns.us
  • ns-us.1and1-dns.de
  • ns-us.1and1-dns.org
You can also decide to continue using your domain provider's name servers if you'd like. This will keep the current website linked with the domain and any e-mail accounts in use.

To make this selection, choose the option Domain provider's name servers and then click Confirm selection.
Please note:
- You must set the correct DNS settings with your domain provide within 4 weeks following setup. Otherwise, the domain will automatically be deleted from your portfolio.

- It can take up to 48 hours to update your DNS settings. Your website will only be available from 1&1 via your domain afterwards.

- To make sure everything runs smoothly, we recommend not changing the default name servers saved in the 1&1 DNS settings.
Step 7
Your external domain is now being set up for your contract. You can click the Use domain button to alter settings for the domain, or click the Set up another external domain button to begin setting up another external domain.
