Manually Install WordPress via SSH

For packages with SSH access.

Follow the steps below to install WordPress using SSH (Secure Shell).

If you do not have SSH access, you will need to Manually Install WordPress via FTP.

If you do not know how to use SSH or need a refresher, please reference the Help Center articles regarding SSH.

Step 1
If you have not already, you must Create a MySQL Database before you begin.
Step 2
Once you have established an SSH connection, download the latest WordPress files using the wget command:

Use the command tar xfvz latest.tar.gz to extract the compressed file.

Step 4
You should see that a new wordpress folder exists now that you have uncompressed the data. Type ls -lah to view files and folders in the current directory.

Step 5
It is best to rename the folder similar to the website that will be using WordPress. In this example, we rename the folder to 1and1help/ by using the command mv wordpress/ 1and1help/ to move the folder into the current directory which will also allow us to rename the folder.

Step 6
Now that the folder has been renamed, you will have to ensure that the domain points to this folder. You must log into the 1&1 Control Panel and change the destination folder for the domain to the folder you just uploaded. To edit destination see How do I set up or change a destination for the domain?
Please note:
It may take ~15 minutes until the domain will point at the correct folder after making changes.

Open a browser and access your domain. In this example, the domain is

When the domain points to the correct folder, you should see a WordPress page informing you that there is no configuration file. Click the button for Create a Configuration File. Click Create a Configuration File

If the config file is created successfully, you will be informed of the information you need to complete the setup. Primarily, you will need the database information from the 1&1 Control Panel. Please reference Where do I find the necessary information to connect to MySQL Database? and when ready, click Let's go!

Fill out the database information where required as seen in the screen shots below. An example has been shown for both a 1&1 Managed Server and Linux Web hosting packages. Please reference the correct image below.

If the information is correct, you will be informed that WordPress is ready for installation. Click the Run the install button to continue.

You will be prompted to enter a Site Title (A), Username (B), Password (C) and Your E-mail (D) address. If you wish, select Allow my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati. (E) to allow the site to be indexed by search engines. Enter the appropriate information and click Install Wordpress

When finished, click the Install WordPress button.

Please write down your username and password for your own reference. Wordpress has now been installed successfully and you may now click the Log In button to begin setup of your Worpress site! Retain your username and password and click Log In

The URL to log into Wordpress will simply be your domain followed by wp-login.php, such as
