Use an FTP Account With Your Own Subdomain

Learn how to configure your own server name for your FTP account.

When setting up a hosting package, a server name (host name) is automatically assigned to the FTP account. This name can't be changed. However, you can set up as many subdomains as you would like and use them to configure your FTP account.

Benefits of your own server name:

  • A name like ftp.yourdomain.com can be memorized more easily than a name like uxxxxxxxxx.1and1-data.host.
  • If you have a Linux Hosting package, you can also use SFTP programs which do not support .host in the server name and cannot connect to the SFTP server.
Step 1
Log in to your 1&1 Control Panel and select the relevant package.
Step 2
Select Secure FTP Account from the Hosting section of the 1&1 Control Panel.

Step 4
Write down the server name shown in the connection data.
  • For Linux Hosting it should look like this:
    homexxxxxxxxx.1and1-data.host
  • For Windows Hosting it looks like this:
    winshpdex.1and1.com

The 1&1 DNS server will be updated within an hour. Afterwards, you can use your subdomain as an alternate server name for FTP connections.

Please note:
It may take up to 72 hours before you can establish an FTP connection from the new subdomain over every Internet connection. Further information is available in the Factors Influencing the Duration of DNS Updates article.
