Transfer Your Domain to 1&1

Learn how to initiate the transfer of a domain from another company to your 1&1 account.

This article is intended for those whom want to transfer their domain to an existing 1&1 account from another company. If you have already added your domain to the 1&1 Control Panel as an external domain and want to now completely transfer the domain to 1&1, please read how to Transfer Your External Domain's Registration to 1&1 instead.

Please note:
Your website files, databases, e-mail accounts, or any other data associated with your domain will not automatically transfer with the domain. This must be done separately.

It is recommended that you first read the Transfer of Registrar Process Overview to familiarize yourself with the Transfer of Registrar process.

Step 1
You will need to contact the company where your domain is currently registered and fulfill the following requirements before you begin the remaining process through the 1&1 Control Panel:
  • Update the domain contact details (WHOIS info) to ensure your e-mail address is correct.
  • Obtain the domain's Authorization Code (if applipicable).
  • If the domain has a Transfer Lock enabled, you will need to unlock the domain for transfer.
  • Please backup all website files, databases, e-mail accounts, and take note of any subdomains created using that domain. You will need to create these backups with your current host before you initiate the transfer as none of this data will transfer with the domain.
  • If you plan to keep your current DNS settings, contact your current provider to make sure that the existing DNS services will continue to function after the transfer to 1&1. This will ensure that there is uninterrupted connectivity of your services during your domain transfer.
Step 2
Log in to your 1&1 Control Panel and select the relevant package.
Step 3
Click the Transfer domain from another provider link from the Domains panel.

Please note:
Choosing to keep your current DNS settings ensures that the DNS settings for your domain will remain unchanged during the transfer and that all functions will remain available without interruption. If you want to use your domain with 1&1 services, you can reconfigure the DNS settings to the 1&1 name servers after the transfer is complete.

You will receive an e-mail addressed to the Reg-C or Admin-C contact specified for the domain to acknowledge and allow the transfer. Once the acknowledgment for a transfer is received, 1&1 will start the actual transfer process, which usually takes 5 calendar days. In the process of transfer, typically DNS information will change which may result in an additional 24-48 hours for propagation to complete.
