Use Custom Name Servers with 1&1 DNS as a Fail-Safe

Learn how to configure a domain to use custom (possibly 3rd party) name servers while still keeping the 1&1 name servers as a backup option.

Altering name server configuration for a domain is not recommended unless you have ample knowledge of the Domain Name System.

Step 1
Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password.

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Step 5
Select Other name servers from the Name servers section (A). Enter the Primary name server address in the Name Server 1 text box. Select 1&1 name server from the Secondary name server drop-down menu. Please note that using the 1&1 name servers as a backup in the case of an outage by your primary name server, will result in traffic being directed to the IP address of your 1&1 package.
