Use an IP Address for Your Domain's MX Record

For advanced users

Learn how to use an IP address as your domain's MX record.

To change your MX record using the normal process, please reference How do I edit/change my domain's mail servers (MX Record)?

To use an IP address for your MX records requires a three part process:
1.) Create two subdomains (such as mx00.domain.com and mx01.domain.com) since two addresses are required for an MX record.

2.) Assign the IP address(es) for your mail server(s) to each subdomain.

3.) Use the two subdomains created that point to the IP address(es) of your mail server(s) as the MX records for a domain.

Part 1: Create subdomains
Step 1
Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password.

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Repeat the same steps above to create a second subdomain such as mx01, as you will need at least two addresses for the MX record.
Please note:
Even if you only have one IP address for your mail server, you can use the same IP address for mx00 and mx01 in the next step just as long as you have created two subdomains.
