Use 1&1 E-mail for a Domain Hosted with Another Company

Learn how to manage e-mail accounts with 1&1 for a domain that is registered with another company or is using a third-party DNS host.

This article is intended for those who have a domain and website hosted with another company, but want to use 1&1 to create and manage the e-mail accounts for that domain.

If you would like to use 1&1 to manage your e-mail addresses for a domain and also use 1&1 to host the website for your domain, you can either Transfer the Domain to 1&1 or Point the Domain to 1&1 Name Servers instead.

Step 1
Log in to your 1&1 Control Panel and select the relevant package.

Click Transfer domain from another provider from the Domains panel.

Enter the domain name that will use 1&1 for its e-mail but is registered with another company or is using a third-party DNS host and click Check Domain. 1&1 Domain Transfer screen

Review your selection and then click Continue Shopping cart

Review the data we currently have on record about you. If your user details are correct, click on continue to checkout. User Data

A summary of your order and your address details is shown. Check the box next to the Terms & Conditions. Additionally, you have the option of receiving product updated by clicking the check box above the Terms & Conditions. Place your order by clicking on Order now. Check out screen

You must know the current DNS addresses for the domain for the next steps. To double-check the addresses, check the WHOIS information for your domain at http://who.is/ by typing your domain name into the search bar on the website and clicking the Search button. The Search button is to the right of the text box

Search for the Name Servers section and write down all the name servers listed.

Go back to the 1&1 Domain Center home page. Click the arrow icon next to the domain name in question to display an options menu. Domain center home page

Select Edit DNS Settings from the Domain Settings section of the options menu. Domain center home page

You can now add your own name servers or 3rd party DNS host's name server addresses into the 1&1 Control Panel.
  • Click the Other name servers radio button.
  • Enter the first name server address into the Name Server 1 text box.
  • Select My secondary name servers from the Additional name servers drop-down box to add a second address.
  • Enter the second name server address into the Name Server 2 text box.
  • You may add a third and forth name server address if necessary, but only two are required.
  • Click the Save button to save your settings.

A confirmation page is displayed. It may take up to 48 hours until the new name servers set are recognized by all servers/computers on the Internet.
