Transfer Your Domain Away from 1&1

The following steps will teach you how to transfer your domain away from 1&1 to another registrar.

Please note:
Please note that transferring all domains out of your hosting package does NOT cancel the hosting plan itself. The hosting plan will remain active and will continue being billed until cancelled.

To transfer a domain away from 1&1, the following conditions must be met:

  • The domain can not have been registered or transferred in the last 60 days.
  • The account containing the domain must be in good standing.
  • The domain's contact information should be updated.
  • The domain must be unlocked for transfer.
  • The domain's authorization code is needed (if applicable).

Before transferring a domain away from 1&1, please backup all website files, databases, e-mail accounts, and take note of any DNS settings or subdomains created under the domain as no data or configuration will transfer with the domain!

It is suggested to initiate a domain transfer at least 1 month before the domain's expiration to allow ample time. Please read how to Check a Domain's Expiration Date to find out when the domain is going to expire.

Step 1
Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel using your Customer ID OR domain name and your password.

If you have only one package, you will land on the Administration page. If you have more than one package, select the package in question to reach its Administration page.

Step 2
Click the Manage domains link from the Domains panel.
Step 3
Check the box next to the domain which is to be transferred away from 1&1. Click the Contact button and then select Show Domain Contact Details.

Step 4
Check the Registrant Contact (Reg-C) and the secondary Administrative Contact (Admin-C) to ensure that the information is correct. If so, click the Cancel button.

If the information needs to be updated, click the Edit All Contacts button and update the information necessary. Check the WHOIS information to make sure the contact details have updated before initiating the transfer request with the Gaining Registrar. This will avoid further complications and extended delays. It may take ~24 hours for the WHOIS information to updated.

Step 9
Take note of the Auth code for the domain. The authorization code is needed when initiating the transfer request with the Gaining Registrar as verification that you are the current holder of the domain. Some domains do not have Authorization Codes assigned to them. For these domains, the Auth Code will not appear at the bottom of the list on the Info page. Retain the Auth Code

Step 10
You may now initiate the transfer process using your Authorization Code with the Gaining Registrar. The Gaining Registrar will need to obtain express authorization from the current registrant via electronic (typically e-mail) or physical (typically a signed and faxed form) means. Once the gaining registrar has received confirmation from the domain owner to transfer the domain, the request is sent to 1&1 for the domain's release. 1&1 will release the domain after five(5) days as required by ICANN if there are no restrictions, disputes, etc.
